Days Gone features a variety of gameplay mechanics, including third-person shooting, melee combat, and stealth. Players must use a combination of these mechanics to survive in the harsh post-apocalyptic world. THE GAMEPLAY

Days Gone makes zombies scary and a big problem. These zombies don’t move slowly and are not pushovers. They will run you down and quickly overwhelm you if you let them. Planning ahead with traps and an escape plan pays off. When both of those fail, managing stamina to get away becomes imperative to survival.

In a world where groups of people are at war with one another, zombies are a constant threat. Deacon can plan to exterminate a raider’s camp, but at any time the zombies can interfere and they can interfere with both sides. You and the enemy are always at risk. If a gunfight breaks out, the zombies may hear the sounds and make their way to the action. I love all of these zombie dynamics. It makes the zombies ‘realistic’.

Zombies aside, the towns, camps, and open world all flow wonderfully. The town felt like they were once populated and there is so much left behind to give off the feeling of a once vibrant town. The camps can be small or large and they all manage to feel like a camp, not just a spot you need to go take out some enemies. The open world is large and vast with a lot to explore.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Days Gone is dreadful. A lot of people died and there is plenty of evidence to discover that proves it. Skeletons lie in the street, sit in cars, or lie in beds. Personal belongings are scattered everywhere to show panic or defeat. The wildlife thrives. The environment slowly takes over man’s creations. As I said, it’s dreadful, but a zombie apocalypse would be dreadful so it makes sense.

The world looks beautiful. There is a mix of flatlands, rolling hills, swamps, and mountains, all of which can be susceptible to dynamic weather effects at any moment. Deacon seems to dislike the rain quite a bit. In my experience, I ran into rain quite often which can slowly damage your bike.

The sounds are perfect. Gunshots and screams from a distance actually sound like they are coming from a distance. Storms roll in with thunder that gets louder as the storm gets closer. The bike sounds like a genuine bike although I may have considered something a bit quieter to get around on.

AS I SEE IT

Days Gone is a pleasant surprise. While ratings and reviews are favorable towards Days Gone, I read a lot of mixed feelings towards the game from other gamers. With that said, I wasn’t so sure about what to expect.

I’ll admit that the first couple of hours or so of the game left me feeling underwhelmed. This was mainly due to the dialog and the controls felt a bit wonky to me. However, I stuck with the game and after some time, I got used to the controls and the story took a turn for the better.

Some of the dialogs can be a little goofy, especially from the dude who interrupts you with his radio broadcasts. The goofy dialog wouldn’t be much of a big deal if the rest of the game didn’t take itself so seriously but it does so the goofy dialog does have a bit of a stamp on the game.

As I see it, it’s a great game.
